American Legion to host Memorial Day service

The American Legion Post 109 will hold its annual Memorial Day service at 11a.m. on Monday, May 28 in the courtroom of the Hart County Courthouse to honor local fallen heroes.

Reverend Carter Tucker and Colonel Barry Jones will be guest speakers  following the presentation of colors by the Hart County JROTC.

Ashley Tucker will sing the National Anthem, while Jamee Floyd will sing “Letters From War.”

Something new to add to the atmosphere this year will be a bagpiper playing “Amazing Grace” as people come into the courtroom to be seated.

To conclude the service, attendees will file outside with more bagpipe music filling the air to witness the placing of a wreath on the Veterans of All Wars monument on the courthouse lawn. Post 109 commander James Fulghum will deliver a speech on the American flag, from the point of view of the flag, after the placing of the wreath on the monument. “I’m looking for a good crowd,” said Fulghum. “We had a good crowd last year and I’m hoping for the same this year.

Carter Tucker did a great job and everybody’s asked for him again.”  According to Fulghum, individual memorials with the names of each soldier from Hart County who died in combat (which includes the span of time from the Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War) will be placed on the courthouse

lawn sometime this weekend in preparation for the service. According to Fulghum, Hart County lost no soldiers to Desert Storm. During the service, all

names (which numbered 69 last year) of fallen soldiers from Hart County will be read aloud as a bell tolls after each one.
