American Legion Post 109

Supporting Our Veterans and Community!

Excellence Award

At the Dept. of Georgia American Legion Sate Convention June 26-28th, Dalton GA Post 109 gained national prominence when it was announced that the Post achieved the Post Excellence Award.

The citation reads “Hart County Inc. Post 109 has demonstrated excellence in serving their community above and beyond ALL expectations. In keeping with the aims of our preamble, this post and its members have displayed exemplary efforts through “devotion to mutual helpfulness”.

To qualify for this award, a Post must show excellence in four areas: membership, youth activities, community service, service to troops or veterans.

Post 109 exceeded its membership goal and increased membership by 10%.

The Post sent two young men to the district oratorical contest; awarded 3 college scholarships; and financially supported JROTC program.

The ongoing effort of placing memorials on the courthouse square, decorating individual graves with American flags was even overshadowed with the Wreaths Across America program which saw 1700 wreaths placed on veterans graves in Hart County.

Veterans services included the Support Our troops effort of packing and sending boxes of personal care items to deployed units and directly providing financial assistance to local veterans.

During its regular meeting July 7th, the District Commander Fred Zimbro and the Senior Vice Commander Bill Stites visited Hartwell and presented the award to Commander Bill Blazek and Senior Commander Bill Fogerty. Zimbo noted Post 109 is the only post of 22 in his district to achieve this distinction. Statewide about 10% of the Posts qualify.

The district officers picked the right meeting for the visit because it was the annual 4th of July celebration which featured Satchemo’s pork and chicken.
