2015 Oratorical Winners

Winners of the Oratorical contest held in Hartwell are;

1st Place - Will Maxwell

2nd Place - Zach Tellano

3rd Place - David Gaines and Tyler Beader 

Will Maxwell and Zach Tellano will compete in the District contest in Jefferson.

 A local high school students in Hart County will be going on to regional competition in the 2015 American Legion annual Oratorical Contest.

This year’s winner was Hartwell student Will Maxwell.  Maxwell is the son of Brent and Holly Maxwell, and is a Junior as a home schooled student in Hart County. Maxwell took home a $250 cash prize.

He will now go on to regionals in Jefferson where he will compete with other winners from surrounding Northeast Georgia counties in the American Legion Georgia’s District 10 contest.

The local Post 109 competition took place Feb 10th in the Family Life Center of Hartwell First Baptist Church. 
American Legion Post spokesman Bob Savage said about five students from Hart County participated this year.

Their material covered some aspect of the U.S. Constitution and had to be an original work which emphasizes the duties and obligations of a citizen to our nation.

The second part of the competition involved a second speech that demonstrated the student’s overall knowledge of the Constitution.  Contestants were given a topic on the Constitution and asked to speak extemporaneously for three minutes.

Judges graded the speeches on the quality of the content, as well as the student’s delivery and comprehension of the topic.

Savage said the students spent all of last fall preparing for the competition, even getting some professional help.

Second place winner was Zach Tellano – Tellano is the son of Randy and Ruth Daniel.  He took home a $150 prize.

In a tie for 3rd place were Daniel Gaines who is the son of Tim and Lara Gaines of Hartwell and Tyler Beaver who is the son of Tonya Beaver of Hartwell. Both Daniel and Tyler earned a $100 cash award.

Winners from each of the fifty states will conclude this year’s national contest in April, in Indianapolis, Indiana where the winner of the national competition will win $18,000.
