On May 3, American Legion Post 109 Commander William Fogerty and Youth Affairs Chairman, Ken Dansbury, awarded three outstanding Hart County 2016 graduates $1,000 college scholarships. Kristen Atkins, daughter of Mike and Deneen Atkins and Carrie Madison Stone, daughter of Benson and Sherrie Stone will attend the University of Georgia. Will Maxwell, son of Brent and Holly Maxwell will attend Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. All three will begin their enrollments this fall. Competition for these scholarships was keen among nine applicants from graduating Seniors throughout Hart County. Each Senior’s record was reviewed by five independent judges who scored their students’ history based on the following criteria of academic achievement, extra-curricular and work activities, plus recommendations from adults who know them well. Every judge commented all the applicants were well qualified and determining “winners” was challenging as each was “outstanding.” Post 109 Commander Bill Fogerty expressed the pleasure felt by Hartwell’s American Legion to award these promising students these scholarships. Each was wished the very best success as they begin their college education. American Legion Post 109 is proud to sponsor several positive educational and leadership programs for Hart County youth encouraging them to achieve educational goals.
