High School Graduate Awarded Scholarship

By Hartwell’s American Legion Post 109

Adriana Hoell Awarded $ 1,000 College Grant

An additional outstanding Hart County High School recent graduate received a $ 1,000 scholarship at Hartwell’s American Legion Post 109 monthly meeting on August 4.

The latest recipient recognized was Adriana Hoell – a member of the 2015 Graduating Class at Hart County High School.  Adriana is the daughter of Sarah and Roy Hoell of Hart County and will attend Armstrong State University in Savannah.

Earlier this summer at its June meeting, Post 109 had recognized and awarded each of three other Hart County High School recipients with $ 1,000 scholarships.  These graduates were Conner Ankerich – son of Sherry Ankerich of Canon; Daniel Luke Bauknight – son of Ginger and Slate Bauknight of Canon; and Matthew Hill – son of Kim and and Mark Hill of Hartwell.

Competition for these scholarships was very keen among the numerous applicants from graduating Seniors throughout Hart County.  Each individual’s record was thoroughly reviewed by five independent judges who scored their application on the student’s history in the areas of extra-curricular and work activities plus letters of recommendation from adults who know them well.  Academic achievement in core subjects was also an important factor, although it was assumed acceptance by any institution of higher learning would indicate satisfactory performance in this area.  Finally, each one was asked for and judged on a short essay on the relevance today of Thomas Paine’s quote – “Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it.”

A frequent remark made by almost every judge underscored how difficult it was to finalize the relative rankings since it seemed that “each and every one of the applicants were “winners” because each was so outstanding”.

Post 109’s Commander Bill Fogerty expressed the great pleasure felt by Hartwell’s American Legion members with these awards, and wished each of the four recipients the very best as they begin the next stage of their lives.
